REVIEW: Dragon Gate ‘King of Gate’ Final Stages (09/06 & 10/06, Hakata Star Lanes, Fukuoka)

Added by Luke Hickey

This will be more of a brief recap with some slight reviewing/storytelling of what happen at Dragon Gate’s final two days of King of Gate 2018.

Between the two days, what’ll transpire will likely be the advancing of the war between rival factions, ANTIAS and Over Generation, who’ll be meeting on July 7th in a 4 vs 4 Losers Disband match, Saturday will feature build for Sunday’s Open the Twin Gate defence and the winner of King of Gate will be decided and then face Masaaki Mochizuki on Sunday for Open the Dream Gate championship.

Both days will feature build for Open the Triangle Gate match on July 7th which will see Natural Vibes defend against Ryo Saito, Don Fuji and K-Ness.

Day 1 Results:

K-ness & Masaaki Mochizuki defeat Natural Vibes (Punch Tominaga & YASSHI)

Susumu Yokosuka defeats Shun Skywalker

Shun Skywalker is one for the future, Dragon Gate appear to be building him up. I reckon a title reign of some sort in the next year or so, likely Triangle, Twin or Brave Gate, but for now continues to impress against mainstays of Dragon Gate.

Ben-K vs. Yasushi Kanda – No Contest

Ended due to ANTIAS interference, but Over Generation was also present.

Natural Vibes (Genki Horiguchi & Kzy) defeat Don Fujii & Ryo Saito

2/3 of the Open the Triangle Gate Champions get the win over 2 of their upcoming challengers, hyping the match that’ll happen at the Korakuen.

Tribe Vanguard (BxB Hulk, Kagetora & Yosuke Santa Maria) defeat MaxiMuM (Big R Shimizu, Jason Lee & Naruki Doi)
Kagetora & Yosuke Santa Maria will be challenging Big Ben (Ben-K & Big R Shimizu) for the Open the Twin Gate titles on Sunday, Big R Shimizu is also on a losing streak much to the bemusement of Naruki Doi. Shimizu took the fall here, will there be new champions on Sunday?

Over Generation (Dragon Kid, Gamma & Kaito Ishida) defeat ANTIAS (Eita, Shingo Takagi & Takashi Yoshida)
Over Generation getting the win over ANTIAS, but they’ll meet again Sunday so can Gamma and co. maintain their upper hand?

King of Gate 2018 Final Match

Masato Yoshino defeats YAMATO
Going into the tournament I thought it would be YAMATO, so I wasn’t surprised to see him here. And even Yoshino winning isn’t entirely surprising at all, multi time champion in Dragon Gate, one of its great talents and First Generation from Ultimo’s Gym. A good match which the Speed Star won even in the face of multiple Ragnarok’s from YAMATO. It’ll be interesting to see how YAMATO picks himself up from here.

Before the start of action on Day 2, Masato Yoshino and Masaaki Mochizuki entered the ring to sign papers, take photographs for the main event. Yoshino was presented with a key to unlock the Dream Gate, will he be victorious over Mochizuki?

Day 2 Results:

Natural Vibes (Kzy, Susumu Yokosuka & YASSHI) defeat Don Fujii, K-ness & Shun Skywalker
Kzy got the win on Shun Skywalker which spared two out of three of his challengers for his, Yokosuka’s and Horiguchi’s Triangle Gate Championships from suffering the losing pinfall. It was a decent trios match to open proceedings, but nothing ground-breaking or unexpected.

Genki Horiguchi defeats Yuki Yoshioka
Horiguchi unsurprisingly getting the win here. Yoshioka really needs something otherwise he’s going to be wasted, his peers like Ben-K are surpassing him.

Ryo Saito defeats Punch Tominaga
Largely a comedy match, but gives Saito another win over Natural Vibes, while not pinning any of the champions, giving both challengers and champions momentum going into July 7th at the Korakuen.

Tribe Vanguard (BxB Hulk & YAMATO) defeat MaxiMuM (Jason Lee & Naruki Doi)
YAMATO getting the win here over Jasaon Lee, a quick win was needed after his defeat to MaxiMuM member Yoshino in last night’s final.

ANTIAS (Eita, Shingo Takagi, Takashi Yoshida & Yasushi Kanda) defeat Over Generation (Dragon Kid, Gamma, Kaito Ishida & Mondai Ryu)

Could this be a preview of the July 7th showdown? While I like ¾ of ANTIAS, the only one being Yoshida, and in general I just don’t like Over Generation, yet I feel myself vying for them to win the feud. I like Takagi and Eita, huge respect for Kanda, yet VerserK/ANTIAS, just feels so stale and Dragon Gate needs new heels.

Open the Twin Gate Title Match
Big Ben (Ben-K & Big R Shimizu) (c) defeat Tribe Vanguard (Kagetora & Yosuke Santa Maria
I wasn’t so convinced with Kagetora last year but recently I find myself coming around to him. This was a solid first defence for Big Ben, it should be noted that while they won, Ben-K got the pinfall on Santa Maria. Yosuke Santa Maria looked strong despite this after taking a series of big impact moves like a massive spear from Ben-K and Shot-Put Slams from Big R.

Open the Dream Gate Title Match

Masato Yoshino defeats Masaaki Mochizuki (c)
Yoshino is the new Champion after a hard fought match with Mochizuki, much of the crowd were behind him despite being part of the Dragon Gate hierarchy that was revealed after CIMA left for China.

Shingo Takagi came out to challenge him as he celebrated, the match will take place at Dragon Gate’s Kobe World Wrestling Festival, their mania. This puts the corporate side of DG against the anti-establishment Takagi.

It was a good two days but after the events of Dominion, I was left shattered hence the brief recap. Dragon Gate have been in transition in recent times but things are looking good for them currently, 1,500ish in attendance both days and a streaming service that showed both days live.
