G1 Climax 28 Final
Kota Ibushi vs Hiroshi Tanahashi

Omega taking a backseat and seconding Ibushi may have been expected, but one of the nicest surprises of this years tournament appeared when Katsuyori Shibata came on the screen as he was seconding Tanahashi. These two men battled for over 30 minutes in front of the Budokan crowd, a crowd that to me appeared to be in favour of the Ace, Tanahashi. Tanahashi, considered the better wrestler of the two held an advantage until the striking capabilities of Ibushi came to fore. But neither man backed away, they both wanted this. Tanahashi went for the legs of Ibushi with two seating Dragon Screw’s and sitting deep into the Cloverleaf, doing all he could to weaken the base, the strikes and the speed of Ibushi. The match overall was fantastic, but the closing stretch really brought it home that today was special. Such fighting spirit and determination but their could only be one winner and now, 3 time G1 winner, Hiroshi Tanahashi was crowned champion after delivering 3 High Fly Flow’s to Ibushi. Ibushi had enough arms to box his deity, had enough heart but the Iron Will of the Ace of the Universe prevailed, in an arena where the likes of Misawa and Kawada rocked to it’s foundations, another match will be added to the legacy of Budokan. Kota Ibushi vs Hiroshi Tanahashi just had a classic.

Hiroshi Tanahashi finishes this G1 with a total record of 8-1-1. Amazing.
