Lucha Underground Season 2 Episode 1 (27/1/16) Review

Added by Ben Quy

It’s back! Lucha Underground season two is here and according to Matt Striker “The Temple is a much darker place”. Catrina is running the place with current champion Mil Muertes presiding over events in the temple from a Dark throne above the ring. We kick things of with Fenix wanting to challenge Mil Muertes for the title by the right of being the Gift of the Gods champion but he is told Catrina that he will have to wait until next week for he will be in the opening contest defending his title against his longtime hunter King Cuerno and that match is opening contest.

King Cuerno vs. Fenix © for the Gift of the Gods Championship.

I can’t remember how many times we have seen this two wrestler fight in Season One but this match is no different it is always an excellent contest. Starting with a nice outside spot where Cuero hit the apron hanging DDT to the outside with a sickening thud. These two know each other so well that the match has an excellent flow back and forth. Trading kicks and blows to each others head like nobody’s business. excellent submission sequence late in the match with Fenix hitting a cutter into a dragon sleeper with Cuerno escaping and applying a surfboard stretch into a dragon sleeper. Fenix gets a two count from a double stomp off the top turnbuckle whilst Cuerno is sitting on that very buckle. Cuerno hits the ‘Thrill of the Hunt’ but also only manages to land a two count and you can see that frustration is beginning to set in. So much so that he runs into a superkick from Fenix and lands him flat on the mat. Fenix goes for his 450 splash off the ropes but misses! Cuerno picks him up and hits a tombstone piledriver variation that has been to seen to be believed. The three is counted and we have a new Gift of the Gods champion.

Son of Havoc vs. Angelico vs. Ivelisse for the number one contendership to the Lucha Underground Heavyweight Championship.

Catrina is continuing to assert her will in this dark temple, challenging the former Trios team champions to fight each other for the number one contendership to Mil Muertes title later in the evening. Very playful opening to this match with each wrestler going for the pin on each other without doing too much damage. This all quickly goes to the wayside when a 3 way test of strength causes Ivelisse frustration and she assaults Angelico with a swift kick which ultimately ends up with Angelico planting Ivelisse with a running knee strike to the face. Son of Havoc lands a elbow and then a springboard splash onto Angelico and this match is truly underway. Great back and forth between all three competitors each showcasing their different talents from Angelico’s innovative kicks to Son of Havoc’s high flying offense to Ivelisse really showing that she is ‘The Baddest Bitch’ in Lucha Underground. Angelico goes to suplex Son of Havoc off the rope but is countered and thrown to the mat. Havoc goes for his shooting star press but Ivelisse cuts him off and rolls up Angelico for the 3 count and she will face the man of a thousand deaths for the Lucha Underground championship.

Ivelisse vs. Mil Muertes for the Lucha Underground Heavyweight Championship.

The odds might be stacked against her but could Ivelisse become the first woman to hold the Lucha Underground title? I guess we’ll find out now! Before the contest can even get underway the Disciples of Death attack Angelico & Son of Havoc taking them out of this title equation. The bell rings and Ivelisse is completely pie-faced by this mountain of muscle. She comes back hitting him with everything she has got but Mil Muertes is no-selling with the best of them and clubs her over the back sending her into the mat. I was expecting this to be a straightforward squash match as one would expect from a giant man versus a smaller opponent but their was some great submission spots from ivelisse in between the brutal beatings she was taking from the much larger man. Misguided interference from Catrina rewards her with a accidental spear from Mil Muertes and two count from a schoolboy pin from Ivelisse. A now furious Mil Muertes hits a spinning powerslam followed up by the flatliner to retain his title but it was a valiant effort from Ivelisse.

Ending Segment

Post match, Mil calls for the lick of death from Catrina, Who refuses and demands that more damage be done to the fallen opponent. Mil picks up Ivelisse for another flatliner much to the disgust of Matt Striker & Vampiro. Out of nowhere Prince Puma appears. Nails Mil with a superkick, grabs Ivelisse and gets the hell out the ring. Mil is furious but he did not realise that Puma did not come alone. From behind Pentagon Jr. nails the backstabber on the champion and proceeds to take his trophy in the form of his armbreaker submission hold. His master Vampiro is speechless has the student acted out of turn? We will have to wait til next week to find out the repercussion to these actions!
