US Bi-Weekly Indy Round-Up (Weekending 26/3)

Added by Luis Gonzalez

EVOLVE held two big shows this past weekend with full reviews for EVOLVE 56 & 57 found on the site, links below. Both the World title and Tag Team titles were retained with the stand out matches being Chris Hero vs. Tracey Williams and Chris Hero vs. Matt Riddle. However, the major news from the weekend came during an appearance by NXT General Manager William Regal who said he was there to scout for WWE and that qualifying matches for the much-anticipated Global Cruiserweight Open would be taking place at EVOLVE in the near future.

As noted in the EVOLVE 56 review, Speedball Mike Bailey was unable to make the EVOLVE shows at the last minute due to visa problems. It is now being said that his visa problems are very serious, with him being unable to come in to the US for a number of years. If the story is true the loss of Mike Bailey would be a major blow to the independent and his career. His stock was on a massive upward trend; here’s hoping the matter somehow gets resolved. ROH has begun building its card for its annual Supercard of Honor. This year will be different however, as it will now be a two day event. Below are the current matches set for the Dallas shows with more to come:

• The Briscoes & War Machine vs. ANX, Silas Young, and The Beer City Bruiser

Lio Rush won the annual Top Prospect Tournament after a great series of matches. The winner usually receives an ROH TV Title match, but this year the winner is receiving a World Title opportunity since the TV Champion Tomohiro Ishii wrestles full time for New Japan Pro Wrestling. Moving forward TV title matches may become rarity for audiences until an ROH competitor wins the gold back.

SHIMMER has announced a tournament will take place at their Dallas premier show to crown an inaugural Heart of Shimmer Champion. The show will be on April 2nd, with the competitors listed below:

SHIMMER 80: Heart of SHIMMER Tournament Competitors –
• Jessica Havok
• LuFisto
• Leva Bates
• Nicole Savoy
• Kimber Lee
• Candice LeRae
• Heidi Lovelace
• Nicole Matthews
• Veda Scott
• Crazy Mary Dobson
• Cherry Bomb
• Cheerleader Melissa

Lucha Underground has already begun their tapings for season 3. This is notable because a number of competitors regularly utilized by Lucha have been having major difficulties with their partner company AAA. If difficulties between the roster and AAA persist than Lucha Underground can either ignore the AAA problems and book the talent or cut out a number of big stars. This matter is developing as of right now with more to come in the future.

AAW (one of the few promotions not booking in Dallas during Wrestlemania weekend) will be holding their 12 Year Anniversary Show (Epic) on April 9th. The matches booked thus far are listed below:

• AAW Heavyweight Title Match: Sami Callihan (c) vs. Tommaso Ciampa
• AAW Tag Team Title Match: The Hooligans (c) vs. Davey Vega & Mat Fitchett
• Zack Sabre Jr. vs. Timothy Thatcher
• Jessica Havok vs. Kimber Lee vs. Heidi Lovelace vs. Candice LeRae
• Andrew Everett, Johny Gargano, Trevor Lee, Chris Hero, Shane Hollister and Zero Gravity have all been signed for the event

This past weekend AAW held its Homecoming Show before a near sellout crowd in Berwyn, IL. Sami Callihan and Ricochet were said to have had a great match along with a great encounter between AR Fox & Davey Vega for the Heritage Title. Mick Foley was in attendance for the show in a segment where he supported Colt Cabana and his partner.

CHIKARA Pro continued its historic booking this past weekend with its Secret of Ooze show. In the main event Princess Kimber Lee successfully defended the CHIKARA Grand Championship against Heidi Lovelace. Feedback from the show was very positive, with Kimber and Heidi possibly becoming the first female combo in history to battle it out for the main title of wrestling promotion.

PWG held All Star Weekend XII a couple of weeks ago, where Zack Sabre Jr. captured the PWG World Title from Roderick Strong. Both nights received positive reviews from live attendees, and the Young Bucks vs. Matt Sydal & Ricochet main event from night one was said to be an absolute spectacle in highflying ability. The next PWG event has not been announced as of yet, but one can only guess that it may be their annual DDT4 tournament.

AIW held two shows this month with Fullest House and Gauntlet for the Gold. The latter featured first time AIW appearances for Zack Sabre Jr. and Pentagon Jr. who came out to massive cheers before a packed house. The wrestler that had everyone talking however was the underrated heel work of Alex Shelly who not only proposed to Candice LeRae during their match, but also called out Johnny Gargano, so long as Gargano was not too busy “washing Gabe Sapolsky’s car”.

The next event for AIW will be Girls Night Out 17 on April 30th in Cleveland, OH. Gail Kim has already been booked for the show.
