Indy Spotlight: King Crab

Added by Frank Burford

The next wrestler that the spotlight is on is another former Chikara wrestler who I have seen for the years wrestling in the weird and wacky universe of wrestling. King Crab has been someone I have been fascinated by, they have made such a “out-there character work” and made it so awesome. First things first I have watched many King Crabs matches and each one has had its own feel to them. As well as wearing anattire to match a crab he completely immerses himself in the character and even during the interview he was completely immersed in the character which I find a credit to himself and his work. When first came across King Crab he was tagging with his stable mates Cajun Crawdad and Rock Lobster but over time started to establish a singles career for himself even claiming Chikara’s prestigious Young Lions Cup.

King Crab has not been discreet through his inspiration of the Crab gimmick was first given to him by Mike Quackenbush but has taken inspiration by the late and great Gran Naniwa which can be seen through his moveset such as the second rope walk elbow drop.

King Crab has been very kind of take part in an interview with me this is what he had to say.

Frank: So what made you want to become a pro wrestler?

King Crab: BEEN A FAN OF IT FOR YEARS AND WANTED TO TRY IT. CRAB LOVES THAT WRESTLING COULD BE ANYTHING YOU WANT. IT CAN BE GOOFY. IT CAN BE SERIOUS. IT CAN MAKE YOU EXCITED. IT CAN MAKE YOU CRY. ALL OF THAT IS WHAT DREW CRAB TO BE A WRESTLER.

Frank: Okay and what were your inspirations as far as wrestlers?

King Crab: EARLY INSPIRATIONS WERE TRIPLE H, SHAWN MICHAELS, AND EDGE. LAST FEW YEARS LEANED MORE TOWARDS STEVE WILLIAMS AND KENTA KOBASHI

Frank: Very interesting and who came up with the Crab gimmick ?

King Crab: IT’S INSPIRED BY GRAN NANIWA, WHICH IS WHY CRAB DOES THE SECOND ROPE NANIWA ELBOW DROP AS A HOMAGE TO HIM. BUT THE GIMMICK WAS GIVEN TO CRAB BY MIKE QUACKENBUSH

Frank: What attracted you to Chikara?

King Crab: AS A LIFELONG COMIC BOOK FAN, THE CHARACTERS AND THE STORIES IS WHAT ATTRACTED CRAB TO CHIKARA. IT WAS REALLY THE ONLY PROMOTION THAT HAD ON GOING STORIES AND THE CHARACTERS USUALLY HAD REAL CONSEQUENCES.

Frank: Okay and why did you choose to wear a mask?

King Crab: WHAT MASK?

Frank: What wrestling do you watch at this moment?

King Crab: GOT TO WATCH AEW EVERY WEDNESDAY NIGHT. LOVE THAT EVERYONE FEELS DIFFERENT AND THEY CAN JUST BE THEMSELVES.

Frank: Cool and what’s your future plans for your career and the end goal?

King Crab: FOR NOW THERE’S NO END GOAL INSIGHT. JUST GOING TO CONTINUE TO WORK HARD AND SEE WHERE THIS WACKY CAREER LEADS TO.

Frank: And do you want to go Abroad when able to?

King Crab: OF COURSE. ALWAYS WANTED TO WRESTLE IN JAPAN. HOPEFULLY ONCE THE PANDEMIC CLEARS UP A BIT THAT CAN HAPPEN.

As you can see King Crab loves using caps and he even does this for his tweets only adding another nuance to the character and a testament to his commitment to the character. In the future I feel King Crab could really push him as a strong style, stiff striking wrestler like his inspirations Steve Williams and Kobashi and this could be a massive stand out point for himself but for the mean time he has done well in taking what could be a limiting gimmick and turn it into something that could be considered awesome and then additionally having moveset to match it. I future is full of endless possibilities for King Crab and If I was a promotor, I would consider putting him in a high-profile match asap.
