PWG/ROH: JC’s Thoughts

Ring Of Honor is a promotion that some consider the world’s number one independent, they have became so large in size that they now have most of their talent signed to contracts. In June 2014, Michael Elgin defeated Adam Cole to become the ROH World Champion, many including myself saw this coming. Elgin had been pushed for almost a year before, he defeated people like Kevin Steen, Paul London, and was even chosen to face both AJ Styles and Kazuchika Okada in a IWGP World Championship Match at one of the indy’s biggest supercards of 2014. On the other side, many could consider the PWG (Pro Wrestling Guerrilla) Battle Of Los Angeles, which this year was a large card full of the best talent.

I’m sure most of you have heard about ROH’s apparent plans for pulling all their talents from PWG, the reason I’ve heard is behind it is that Michael Elgin is pissed off at ROH for making him become trapped in Canada while ROH is really annoyed and took the ROH World Title from his for his “disrespectful” approach for protecting the belt and mainly losing to Trevor Lee in the PWG Battle Of Los Angeles.

It seems that PWG Black Cole Sun will be the final appearance date for many of ROH/PWG Talent, while their PPA talents (like ACH and Cedric Alexander) will be given to choice of ROH or PWG.
I’ve only heard about it being PWG due to Elgin only using PWG as a second promotion. If this is true, this may actually be a killer for PWG as currently O’Reilly is their Champion, but since Kyle O’Reilly has officially been announced for New Japan Pro Wrestling’s Wrestle Kingdom 9 at The Tokyo Dome (the largest show in Japan), it shows that O’Reilly is a big deal for ROH’s relationship with New Japan and that he could easily hold ROH’s action hostage.

Certain guys have legs to stand on, AJ Styles, The Young Bucks, The Addiction (Bad Influence), Matt Sydal and Adam Cole are all massive draws for ROH and would cause problems for ROH if they left. I personally don’t think Styles will return to PWG anytime soon but The Bucks, Sydal and Cole are all on “Black Cole Sun” (obviously named after Cole). I asked Michael Shimaoka on Facebook, if he was in the situation of a PWG/ROH Talent and who would he pick, he stated that he would choose PWG due to many a person loving Pro Wrestling Guerrilla more than Ring Of Honor, yet I pulled up the point that PWG may pay a little more per appearance but ROH has way more shows, and actually holds a television show.
