British Wrestling: A Renaissance

No shock but how good is the British wrestling scene and it’s wrestlers at the moment?

It’s the morning after the night before and some of you may not be aware but once again, Zack Sabre Jr. has won a prestigious tournament in the world of wrestling. Yes, adding to his 2015 PWG Battle Of Los Angeles win (and subsequent heavyweight title win there) Zack won the wXw 16 Carat Gold tournament which saw him defeat Big Daddy Walter in the first round, Will Ospreay in the quarter-final, Sami Callihan in the semi-final and then Axel Dieter Jr in the final. Zack’s career has nothing but outstanding and here’s hoping he goes on to more impressive outings and bigger things.

Sticking with other elements on the British scene, two other guys who have been booked over in the US at PWG like Zack are his one time* partner Marty Scurll & Will Ospreay and these two are a big part of PROGRESS Wrestling, Will was the champion which he won from Jimmy Havoc following a long chase a chase he described in the recent interview with myself thought would be “never ending”. After Havoc left PROGRESS at least for now, Scrull took over as the lead villain, pun intended, in the promotion and as time has gone on he has excelled in solidifying himself as the top bad guy in British wrestling right now.

Just this morning I was able to watch the title defence by Will against Marty against from the promotions Chapter 25 show ‘Chat Shit Get Banged’ from January. WOW, this match was everything I love about professional wrestling, ups/downs, great wrestling, great emotions and story telling. I tweeted after watching it ‘I can’t think of a better match I’ve seen on British soil’ of course this is my opinion and is subjective, I am sure many of you could pick another and none of us would be wrong as it’s all about opinions, it would be boring if we all agreed on things. Back to my point, these two along with Zack really are at the top of their game and are part of a crop of wrestlers that are just outstanding at the moment.

Zack has of course worked over in Japan previously for Pro Wrestling NOAH and we’ve also had another one of our top wrestlers, Mark Haskins work for Dragon Gate over there and just recently it was announced that Ospreay will be heading to Japan himself to work for NJPW which will include him challenging KUSHIDA for the IWGP Jr. Heavyweight title on April 10th. Again, I am not telling you anything you didn’t know but the fact our guys/girls are getting booked abroad is a testament of how great they are at their craft and I hope being recognised as some of the best wrestlers in the world continues.
